They Put The Zing in Zingerman's!
Rare is it for a deli to become famous if it isn't in New York. Zingerman's Deli, located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, however, long ago broke that unspoken East Coast rule.
Located in this lovely college town, the deli was founded in 1982 by Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig and named Zingerman's on a lark. This historic deli is now world famous as it grew from a small shop selling hearty roast beef and corned beef sandwiches to include a general store and large mail order business. A drive to Zingerman's is not unheard of for people living in Chicago or Milwaukee or neighboring Michigan towns.
The sandwiches and homemade breads are top-notch and the sweets--their specialty brownies, legendary sourcream coffee cake, cinnamon rolls and cookies are out of this world. Foodies will love Zingerman's general store for its great variety of rare cheeses and estate olive oils and vinegars. If you're smitten with your deli sandwich, Zingerman's will instruct you on how to make them at home.
Most famous, perhaps, is the Zingerman Reuben, a mound of rye bread, corned beef, select Swiss cheese, Russian dressing, sauerkraut or cole slaw. Consider that an estimated 2,000 pounds of corned beef is cooked weekly in the Zingerman kitchen. So in demand are Zingerman's sandwiches that a long line often forms out the door and down the street. Fear not, however, because service is quick.
Cured meats--salami, corned beef, specialty bacon's and a host of others are sold in the store as are several types of homemade bread such as New Mexico green chile and cheddar, French mountain, Parmesan pepper, rye's, 8 grain, road house and chocolate cherry breads.
Everything sold at Zingerman's is of high quality, but the prices remain moderate. The sandwiches, for example, are so generous that they can easily be shared. An added bonus if you become a Zingerman's fan is that they have a huge mail order business and publish a great catalogue. In addition to it being a source for your Zingerman's addictions, the booklet offers 42 great recipes.
So if you're a deli-addict and scour the nation for the best thing to hit rye bread, don't bypass Zingerman's. What's more, Ann Arbor is a great little town and what you consume at Zingerman's can be walked off by taking a foot tour of this welcoming Michigan community.
